Potent new Defender V8 and XS editions join the Land Rover range

In April of 2021, Land Rover launched the powerful Defender V8 as part of a campaign to modernize its range of stalwart 4x4s.

The Defender V8 built on the rugged 4×4’s class-leading capability, delivering new levels of performance and driver engagement by combining a powerful 386kW 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine with expertly developed suspension and transmission tuning to create the fastest and most dynamically rewarding Defender yet.

The V8 petrol engine wasn’t the only introduction though, with the introduction of a new XS Edition featuring a fresh exterior design, and an optional larger 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment touchscreen. This replaced the hugely successful first edition and combines bespoke design and specification enhancements inside and out. Both Defenders also featured a unique “exterior packs” option, where the owner could choose from options to give their car their own flair, right from the dealer

Circling back to the Defender V8 for a moment though: This truly was the ultimate modern take on Land Rover’s toughest 4×4 yet, paying homage to the rich heritage of eight-cylinder Land Rovers, which have been around since the 1970s. The modern V8 propelled the 90 bodied Defender to 100kmh in 5.2 seconds, thanks to the 386kW and 625Nm power figures.

The Defender V8 also benefitted from the introduction of a new Dynamic program within the Terrain Response system, helping drivers to exploit the more dynamic character and balanced handling.

Back to the XS Edition now, which replaced the hugely successful First Edition. It was a cut above the SE models and featured a unique exterior and interior treatment. Externally, the XS Edition could identified by its bespoke body-coloured lower cladding and lower wheel arches, and distinctive 20-inch diamond-turned alloy wheels finished in Satin Grey. Internally, the XS Edition’s 12-way, heated and electric memory seats are finished in grained leather, and were extremely comfortable.

Comfort was also aided by the comprehensive standard specification, which included electronic air suspension, adaptive dynamics and configurable terrain response, as well as Matrix LED headlights with signature DRL, ClearSight rear view mirror technology and the state-of-the-art Pivi Pro infotainment system with 10-speaker Meridian sound system. This all paired beautifully with the powerful P400 petrol powertrain.
