Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme
Changing a set of old or worn tyres for new ones is an every day process for most workshops, being done as quickly and efficiently as an oil change or changing wiper blades. While there are companies that take away used tyres to create room for more, most of us are unaware of what ultimately happens to them.
Believe it or not, there are over 56 million used tyres taken off of cars in Australia each year. While there are some companies that do their bit for recycling and the environment, only 10% of the 56 million are currently recycled locally into other products or re-used. Nearly 30% are exported to other parts of the globe for re-use, processing or consumed as a tyre derived fuel. The rest – equating to over 60% or 36 million – are put into landfill, stockpiled or illegally dumped.
Just one years worth of used tyres can fill up Sydney Harbour. The TPSS is doing their bit to change that.
That’s where the Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) comes in. The TPSS is an ACCC authorised, government supported, industry framework to effectively reduce the environmental, health and safety impacts of the 56 million used tyres which reach the end of their life in Australia each year.
This will have the multiple benefits of transforming a waste product into a useful commodity, creating new industries and employment opportunities while also reducing the harm caused by the illegal dumping of old tyres.
